Asian Urban Portraits – The Village, The Ruin, The Illegal

Invited by the curator, King Kwang-Yu, of 2011-12 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture, JUT foundation selects three major projects held between 2009 to 2011, which are Illegal Architecture by Wang Shu and Hsieh Ying-Chun, The Vertical Village by MVRDV, and Ruin Academy by Marco Casagrande, to participate this international event and to present the vitality of Taipei City. These three selected projects properly respond to the theme of the biennale – time, space and people, and are expected to create more dialogues about East Asian cities. In the face of aggressive globalization and dominated government policy, how to have the urban regeneration in line with habitants’ needs and with modern convenience as well? It is still a long way to proceed, but it is vital to bring up the issue with different opinions and perspectives – more possibilities are waiting to discover!
