Architecture Workshops for Kids

Architecture is a form of art with great influence on environment, society and our daily life. Learning the role of architecture should not only happen at school or constrain in a certain age. In contrast, architecture education should begin from the early stage with imaginations and explorations, so to help children to observe and discover the environment around them, further, to help them understand the impact of architecture. It is like planting a seed in the kids and wish it will blossom in the future. Focus on children between 6-12 year-old, this project starts in 2009 and has been executed in the other three consecutive years. Each workshop signals our determinations on cultivating architecture education in Taiwan. JUT Foundation will keep paving the way for architecture education to bring next generation a better understanding in our environment and look forward to a better tomorrow with more people participating the urban development, no matter who they are and what they do.

2009 The Little Architects

A fun one-day trip takes the kids to experience as a real architect or an architectural engineer. From reception center for real estate, construction site, design stores to art gallery, kids explore the different phases of making a house – how to constructing and decorating a house while interacting with professionals on site and a series of playful games. In the end, kids are guided to describe their observations and ideas of architecture by drawing.

2011 From S to XL

It is a workshop designed by guiding kids to learn various architectures from different scales. Starting from making a shelter in human scale, then gradually extended to design their own room, to learn the basic principle of structure, and, the last, to make an imaginary city, kids investigate the materials and forms of architecture through playing and crafting. There is no absolute answer but a lot of explorations and imaginations.

2012 Surfing the city by the points

Structure could be deconstructed by point, line and surface. The workshop leads the kids to observe the surroundings from the basic element of structure, the point, to how to create different shapes of space by their own body based on the principle of these three elements. Each kid is playing as a detective. Through the given hints, they are guided to discover these elements in different buildings and installations, to experience the interest of structure and to explore the city in their own ways, step by step.

2013 Let's make a future house

There is no rules, no boundaries, but fertile imaginations. Kids are encouraged to create their own house via colorful corn-made clay. Just simply cut, roll and squeeze, kids could use the clay as a unit of structure and stick them together to build up the future house by their hands. It is time for crafting and allowing kids to show their creativities in any way they like.
