Architecture for People: Challenges and Opportunities of Contemporary East Asian Society

The debates on interrelations between social issues, architects' social responsibility and quality in architecture have been widely expanded since the beginning of modern movement. There is one thing for sure, however, the biggest challenge for every architects of different periods is how to properly respond to various issues in culture, society and environment through their projects in that specific era. Based on it, this conference aims to create a cross-region discussion that focuses on East Asian and Nordic countries to explore the issue from different perspectives.

More than 30 leading East Asian and Nordic practitioners, critics, scholars and historians are invited to deliver presentations or give a talk in this conference. In addition, Juhani Pallasmaa, president of Arkkitehtitoimisto Juhani Pallasmaa KY in Finland, and Terunobu Fujimori, emeritus professor of University of Tokyo in Japan, are also invited as keynote speakers to share their observations and viewpoints. In the end, the conference is expected to foster the dialogues between architecture and contemporary social issues of environment, identity and community.
